Boot

Boot

The term "boot" or "boot-up" refers to the start up of your computer. When you first turn on your machine, it performs a Power On Self Test (POST). Then, it begins to load an operating system. Computers are just a collection of hardware and can perform no useful functions on their own. They must have software loaded on them, in order to perform useful tasks. The process of loading this software is referred to as booting or booting-up.

Restarting your computer is referred to as "rebooting" (booting again). Everytime you turn on your computer, you are "booting" it or "booting up".

Behind the Scenes

During the Linspire boot, you only see a simple splash screen.  But if you press ESC, the boot scripts and messages will be displayed on the screen.   To view the entire message log view the /var/log/syslog file after the boot is complete.

Other potentially useful information can be found with command dmesg (entered in the console)

Boot Options

If you need to boot with a certain option (usually for advanced users):

  • Reboot
  • When grub first appears hit "e"
  • Select the kernel and hit 'e'
  • Add the desired boot option to the end of the line and then hit 'enter'
  • Hit 'b' and your computer should boot with the option.
