A partition is a separate part of your hard disk, that is not affected by files or formats on other partitions, however if the sizing of a partition is wrong, it can destabilize all other partitions, making none of them bootable. Partitions can have a separate format than the rest of the hard disk. For "dual-boot" installations you will need to utilize a spare partition or create a new one by reducing the size of existing partitions and partitioning the unused space.
