Virtual Desktops

How to enable virtual desktops

*Note*: Please follow all the steps carefully. It should take 3 minutes or less.

1. Activate the pager for virtual desktops by right clicking the panel and select Add > Applet > Pager

2. Right click panel and in the Configure Panel dialog, go to Taskbar. Disable the first option ("Show windows from all desktops"). Apply and your done.

3. Right click on your desktop and go into the Configure Desktop... dialog.
a. In the multiple Desktops section, enable 2-3 desktops and the option at the very bottom ("Mouse wheel over desktop background switches desktop").
Optional: Go to Background and select Desktop 2 from the drop down menu and pick a different picture. Do so for desktop 3 if you have one as well.
b. Go to Window Behavior. Enable all the options in the Navagation section.
c. Go to the Advaced tab at the top. In the Active Desktop Borders section, enable Only when moving windows. Apply everything and close that.

4. Right click on the virtual desktop pager and in the show menu , go to row and select 1. Also make sure preview is enabled.

CONGRATULATIONS! You now have a complete multitasking environment all without the clutter.

Here are some cool tests you can do

1. Open many programs in each desktop.
a. When your mouse is on the desktop, scroll mouse wheel up and down. It will switch them. But it doesn't work over icons.
b. On your keyboard press Alt-Tab and hold Alt. (you can release tab now ) You will see all the windows from all desktops and you can select the program you want with your mouse or Tab. It will switch the desktop if it is somewhere else.
c. Move a window to the edge of the screen to bring it over to the next desktop!
d. Middle click on a window titlebar and select To Desktop and the appropriate desktop. Or click the down arrow in the top left of the window.
e. To assign what desktop to start a program on, click the down arrow on the top left of the window -
- hover on "Advanced" - click on "Special Window Settings" - go to the "Geometry" tab and play around with those settings to make you particular app window do what you want. You'll notice that there is a setting for controlling which desktop you want the app to always run on as well as settings to control size and position.

And there is a lot more you can do with virtual desktops.

I hope you all have followed my virtual desktop guide, hopefully you did not all know this stuff already and I have helped to make you more productive.

Some Benefits:

- Eliminate clutter
- Allow dedicated desktops, each can serve their own purpose
- It is an innovative feature not found in Windows
- Allows people to be productive faster
- do not get in the way for people that do not want to use them (but they're so easy to pickup, even my mom uses them all the time)

I am a strong believer in Linux and Linspire. And I think we should show Windows users what Linspire can do that Windows can't, not just that Linspire is capable of doing everything windows can do.
